Transitional Age Teens Talking

Background

Avis & Mark Ridley-Thomas Life Learning Center

About 45,830 youth ages 11 to 25 live in Central and South Los Angeles. Many of these youth will successfully transition into adulthood. For example, at a critical stage of their development, many of the youth will graduate from high school, attend college, enter into the job market, and gain independence. Unfortunately, an estimated 5 to 10% of our youth will not successfully transition from one stage of development into the next because of a number of negative life experiences, such as: housing insecurity, substance abuse, sexual or physical abuse, and involvement with the criminal justice system. In addition, estimates depict that 1 in 5 transition-age youth will experience a mental health issue, but only 11% will receive the needed services. About 75% of mental health and substance abuse issues emerge before age 25; and 14% will experience homelessness.
